Using the tools to go further.

Once in Upper Elementary, students have become competent readers, expressive writers, avid geographers and historians, and emerging mathematicians.

Our approach

Following interests, deepening knowledge.

Now that students have their basic skills, they are encouraged to use these tools to extend their knowledge and enrich their learning as they explore subjects of their own interest, as well as subjects in our prescribed curriculum.

Concrete materials, similar to those used in Lower Elementary, are used to teach math and grammar, while materials drawn from real life teach geography, world cultures, science, and human experience.

Highlights

What Upper Elementary looks like

Math through understanding

Concepts are built through concrete exploration. Once the four operations are familiar, students move into fractions, geometry, algebra, and problem solving.

Presentations

Students are trained to give oral and visual presentations that highlight work done during these years.

Field trips and Glen Helen

Numerous field trips support science, geography, and history. The Upper Unit attends Glen Helen Outdoor School for four days and three nights in the first semester.

An integrated cultural curriculum

Music, visual art, foreign language, and physical education, along with geography, history, and life sciences.
